America invades West Sussex

Goodwood has long championed Americana at the Festival of Speed, and this year that fascination has been amplified. NASCAR stock cars have a class of their own, with the legendary Bobby Labonte leading the way this morning in the equally legendary 1972 Dodge Charger made famous by ‘King’ Richard Petty. Indycar racing is also well represented, with two-time Formula One World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi having made several runs up the Hill aboard the Penske-Chevrolet PC22 which he raced in 1993.

Somewhat slower, but wild in its own way, is the Ford F-150 Raptor pick-up which Ben Collins has been driving all weekend – usually sideways or rotating in a series of lurid donuts. Then there are the various dragsters, Rick Garrett’s ProMod Willys Coupe being perhaps the most out there of them all. This 12.1-litre machine produces around 3000bhp so is good for 218.99mph in only a quarter of a mile…
