Debut success for Spirit Of Bermuda

Horse Racing | Press Article 17/04/24

Two-year-old filly Spirt Of Bermuda (William Haggas/Tom Marquand, 8/1), a 210,000 Guineas purchase at Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up on 25 June, made the perfect start for her connections when winning the seven-furlong British European Breeders Fund EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes on her racecourse debut.

The daughter of Twilight Son began to pick up entering the last quarter mile and really found her feet in the final furlong, getting up close home to score by a head from Iconic Queen (Ralph Beckett/Harry Bentley, 11/1).

Maureen Haggas, wife and assistant trainer to her husband William, said: "Spirit Of Bermuda came from the breeze-ups, so they are always a little bit more street-wise.

"She has been really nice and straightforward. We felt able to run her quite quickly as she has worked nicely and done everything we have asked.

"She behaved immaculately today and ran a nice race. She was green and Tom Marquand just wanted to get her home nicely.

"She just needed to enjoy it today and I think there is plenty of improvement to come.

"Spirit Of Bermuda handled the track well and she is a big filly, but she is a lovely, classy filly.

"You would stay at seven furlongs at the moment, but she will get further looking at her."
