Ed Arkell pleased following day one of the Qatar Goodwood Festival

Speaking at the conclusion of day one of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, Clerk of the Course Ed Arkell said: "We are very pleased. The jockeys seem very happy with the ground - it rode well, on the easy side of good. And we have had some fantastic racing.

"Obviously, Stradivarius was highly impressive in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup; I thought Marcus Tregoning's Alkumait won very well in the maiden, and I think Aidan O'Brien's winner of the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes [Battleground] was very interesting. I see he is quoted for the 2000 Guineas and I thought he got down and battled well and put in a very good performance. It will be exciting to see where he goes from here.

"Tomorrow is a very big day [with the G1 Qatar Sussex Stakes as the highlight]. It is supposed to be dry overnight; we will see but I think we should be bang on good ground tomorrow, and the forecast is for a day much the same as today, possibly a tiny bit warmer."

1:10pm BRITISH EUROPEAN BREEDERS FUND EBF FILLIES' HANDICAP STAKES

Permission was given for ANGEL POWER to wear a red hood to the start. Following the race, William Buick reported that VIVIDLY, unplaced, made a noise and Charles Hills added that the filly appeared to lose its action; the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of VIVIDLY shortly after the race failed to reveal any abnormalities. The Veterinary Officer further reported that WASAAYEF (IRE), which started second favourite and finished fifth, had bled from the nose.

1:45pm UNIBET YOU'RE ON HANDICAP STAKES

Permission was given for WARGRAVE (IRE) to go early to post. RESTORER lost its right-fore shoe on the way to post and was reshod at the start which caused a delay to the start of this race. Having reviewed the start, the Stewards were satisfied that BABBO'S BOY (IRE) had refused to race and was deemed to be a runner. Following the race, James Doyle reported that WARGRAVE (IRE), unplaced, reared as the stalls opened.

2:15pm VEUVE CLICQUOT VINTAGE STAKES (Group 2)

Permission was given for FOUNTAIN CROSS to wear a red hood to the start. Leaving the stalls, FOUNTAIN CROSS, placed fifth, jumped right-handed, leaving YOUTH SPIRIT (IRE), placed third, short of room, but after viewing a recording of the incident it was found that no riding offence was involved. An enquiry was held to consider interference rounding the home bend involving the winner, BATTLEGROUND (USA), ridden by Ryan Moore; DARK LION (IRE), placed sixth, ridden by David Egan and KRAKEN POWER (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Daniel Tudhope. The interference was found to be accidental as BATTLEGROUND (USA) had drifted marginally right-handed rounding the bend, shifting DARK LION (IRE) slightly off its intended line which resulted in Tudhope having to take a check.

2:45pm QATAR LENNOX STAKES (Group 2)

An enquiry was held to consider interference approaching the final furlong when the winner, SPACE BLUES (IRE), ridden by William Buick, interfered with ESCOBAR (IRE), placed, third, ridden by Daniel Tudhope, which in turn interfered with HISTORY WRITER (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Jason Watson. Buick was suspended for 4 days (August 11, 12, 13 & 14) for careless riding as he had allowed his mount to drift right-handed when insufficiently clear and without timely correction, carrying Tudhope off his intended line which in turn caused Watson who was tracking ESCOBAR (IRE) to take a significant check.

3:45pm QATAR HANDICAP STAKES

Permission was given for A MOMENTOFMADNESS and ONLY SPOOFING (IRE) to go early to post and BENNY AND THE JETS (IRE) and FINAL VENTURE to go early to post and be mounted in the chute. Following the race, Tom Marquand reported that RECON MISSION (IRE), which started joint-favourite and finished unplaced, stumbled leaving the stalls.

4:20pm BRITISH STALLION STUDS EBF MAIDEN STAKES

DANZART (IRE) ran freely to post. Having been examined by the Veterinary Surgeon upon arrival at the start, the colt was deemed fit to race.

4:55pm BRITISH EUROPEAN BREEDERS FUND EBF FILLIES' HANDICAP STAKES

SASHENKA (GER), trained by Sylvester Kirk, had entered the Parade Ring after the signal to mount had been given. After interviewing the trainer's representative, Kirk was fined £140. Following the race, Oisin Murphy reported that TORBELLINO moved poorly behind and he therefore pulled the filly up in the home straight; the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of TORBELLINO shortly after the race failed to reveal any abnormalities. Silvestre De Sousa reported that SARVI, unplaced, stopped quickly; the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the mare shortly after the race failed to reveal any abnormalities. Daniel Tudhope reported that SISTER MIDNIGHT (IRE), unplaced, lost its action; the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the filly shortly after the race failed to reveal any abnormalities. Thomas Greatrex reported that DANCING APPROACH, which started co-second favourite and finished third, hung badly left-handed.
