Extreme H, the world’s first hydrogen-powered motorsport championship, will make its public debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, taking place from 10 to 13 July, 2025.
The championship’s appearance at Goodwood marks an exciting return to a place of significance where in 2019, its electric predecessor launched the ODYSSEY 21 race car. The Pioneer 25, centrepiece of the championship, will take part in the famous hillclimb challenge each of day of the event, running 1.16-miles through the Goodwood Estate in front of thousands of live spectators. It will also remain on display in FOS Future Lab for the full duration.
The launch of the Pioneer 25 represents a bold step forward in the transition to clean energy, showcasing cutting-edge hydrogen technology in a competitive racing environment. Drawing from over three years of racing data from Extreme E, the new chassis, manufactured by Spark Racing Technology, is designed for optimal performance, safety, and resilience.
Alejandro Agag, Founder and CEO of Extreme H, said: "We’re incredibly proud to be returning to the legendary Goodwood Festival of Speed, one of the most iconic and prestigious events in global motorsport. It was here in 2019 that we first previewed the Extreme E electric off-road championship, and now we’re back to debut the Pioneer 25 and welcome the next era with thrilling hydrogen racing. After a long-awaited return, we’re thrilled to finally show the public what’s coming next for Extreme H and the future of sustainable racing."
Pushing the Pioneer 25 to its limits throughout the four-day event will be three of the championship’s leading drivers; Catie Munnings, Cristina Gutiérrez, and Klara Andersson, all of whom have played a central role in narrowing the gender performance gap between their male counterparts at the highest levels of competition.
Rally driver Catie Munnings, who competed in all four seasons of Extreme E for the Andretti Altakwilat team, will be first to drive the car on the hillclimb on the opening day of the festival. She said: “It’s an honour to be the first driver announced to take on the iconic Goodwood hillclimb in the Extreme H Pioneer 25. I’ve been part of this journey since the early days of Extreme E, so to now showcase the next generation of hydrogen-powered racing on such a legendary stage is really special.
“Goodwood is such a landmark event in the motorsport calendar, for both drivers and fans, and it’s the perfect platform to debut this cutting-edge technology. The Pioneer 25 is a huge step forward in performance and innovation, and I can’t wait to give people a glimpse of the future of sustainable racing."
As a platform built to innovate, foster collaboration and educate its audiences, Extreme H will also showcase the Pioneer 25 in FOS Future Lab, a dedicated space at Goodwood designed to spotlight the latest and most impactful innovations in science and technology. Visitors will be able to get up close and explore the components that together, power one of the world’s only hydrogen-fuelled race vehicles.
Mark Grain, Technical Director of Extreme H, said: “We’re looking forward to putting the Pioneer 25 to the test against some of the fastest and most advanced racing machines in the world as it takes on the iconic Goodwood Hill.”
But just as exciting is the chance to let the public quite literally lift the lid on the car in FOS Future Lab, where we’ll be breaking down the components and systems that make this one of the world’s only hydrogen-powered race vehicles. It’s a rare opportunity to explore the technology up close and see what makes Extreme H so unique.”
To keep the Pioneer 25 running throughout the weekend, Extreme H will be supported by Fuel Cell Systems Ltd (FCSL), which brings over eight years of expertise in hydrogen compression and dispensing systems. Visiting audiences will be able to see first-hand how the race vehicle is refuelled with pure hydrogen from FCSL’s tried and tested HyQube refueller, with the only resulting emissions from its use being water vapour. The technology also spans high-pressure storage and on-site hydrogen production via electrolysis, showcasing how clean, scalable solutions can support the next generation of sustainable motorsport.
To round off the action, Extreme H will also host a series of panel discussions across the weekend, featuring a range of personalities from across the championship’s ecosystem. These sessions will offer audiences exclusive insights into the championship’s pioneering hydrogen technology, its barrier-breaking approach to gender equality in motorsport, and a peek into the new-look Extreme H championship, set to launch later this year.
Stay tuned to Extreme H’s website and social media channels for the latest updates, where further details on panel timings, driver appearances and opportunities to engage with the Extreme H team will be announced soon.
