On 10 June, Goodwood is taking part in Open Woods & Workshops by hosting an open day at The Forestry Yard. The event is your chance to experience our nation’s wood culture as part of a national initiative from charity, Woodland Heritage.
The Open day will be set in the heart of Goodwood’s working Forestry Yard, behind the Goodwood Farm Shop. This immersive day will offer a behind-the-scenes look at sustainable woodland management, led by Goodwood’s expert Forestry team.
Darren Norris, Estate Natural Landscape Manager at Goodwood said: “We are looking forward to welcoming visitors to our woodland and workshop for this special open day. It’s a truly unique place, rarely open to the public, where you can experience the magic of our native woodland and crafting with timber firsthand.”
John Orchard, Chief Executive of Woodland Heritage, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to champion all that is great about growing trees, using wood and thinking about a better future for generations to come."
Open Woods & Workshops aims to boost engagement in wood culture, growing, milling and making within the UK, as well as help those who grow trees and use wood build connections with others in the timber supply chain. There is also the opportunity to discover more about careers in areas such as forestry and research by meeting industry experts.
Throughout June 2025, a network of woodlands and workshops - from forestry estates, smaller woodlands and sawmills to artists’ and architects’ studios, furniture factories and makers - will host open days across the UK.
These events offer an exceptional opportunity to explore rarely accessible places and skills associated with the wonderful trees grown in the UK and the incredible objects and places that can be made from wood.
Chief executive of Woodland Heritage, John Orchard, added:
“Right now, we aren’t making the most of what we have. What makes me say that? Well, the UK is the second largest net importer of forest products in the world, and at the same time enormous areas of UK woodland sit unmanaged.
“But the situation isn’t hopeless! Open Woods and Workshops is a chance to meet the people and see the places that can help us make the change future generations need from us.”
