Goodwood’s Mud-Masters

In addition to the on-Hill action, the 2016 Festival of Speed is showcasing all manner of ‘off piste’ disciplines. Situated just beyond Molecomb Corner, the Off-Road Arena in the Activities Field plays host to a raft of pumped-up and pared-back off-road racers. Competing in the AWDC and BCCC championships, as well as the gruelling Dakar Rally, these purpose-built machines feature seemingly endless amounts of suspension travel and massively-powerful engines. As such, they can vaunt just about anything in their way, not least the jumps on the Goodwood course.

Star drivers include Frenchman Jean-Philippe Dayraut in his V6 Mitjet bugy, and British charger Ben Duckworth in his Evoque-based LRM-1. Both men are fearless. However, don’t discount the other 13 drivers competing to be the Festival’s mud-master. Each is committed to the point of defying gravity, which became abundantly clear this afternoon. As the third day of the Festival draws to a close amid torrential rain, these off-road monsters are in their element. If anything, they go faster…
