Phil Keen claimed a brilliant win in the Whitsun Trophy for pre-1966 unlimited sports-prototypes. Nevertheless, his win was far from preordained. The pole man led off the line in Peter Burton’s blisteringly quick Lotus 30, only to be shuffled down the order almost immediately after he wrong-slotted and took to the grass at St Mary’s. Lola T70 man Oliver Bryant then assumed the lead with fourth place starter Tony Sinclair moving up to second in his similar car. Keen wasn’t to be denied, though, but had a battle on his hands as Sinclair batted away challenges until 16 minutes into the 25-minute encounter. Keen then made it stick on the Lavant Straight and set off after the leader.
Bryant, whose lead at quarter-distance had stood at 6.5-seconds, was soon reeled in, Keen assuming the lead with less than two minutes to go. Sinclair held on for third, with Ford GT40 ace Mike Whittaker having made his way from 22nd on the grid to a remarkable fourth place by flag fall.

About the Goodwood Revival
The Goodwood Revival is the world’s greatest historic motor race meeting, and the only sporting event of its kind to be staged entirely in a period theme. More than just an unrivalled weekend of historic racing, it is an immersive celebration of a less disposable world, where “make do and mend” was a way of life rather than a casual slogan.
The Revival is, at its heart, a celebration of craftsmanship and sustainability, from an age when possessions were made to last and be cherished. It promotes a thoroughly modern ethos – to “reduce, reuse, repair, restore and recycle” – in the most authentic way possible. All the cars are original, having been lovingly maintained since new, many of the outfits have been handed down through generations, and even the retailers specialise in pre-owned artefacts – everything from clothes and accessories to automobilia and books.
It is, proudly, the world’s biggest and most glamorous second-hand event.
Near concurrently, Ricketts tangled with a backmarker while Dark retired the Bugatti. All eyes were now on Gans who was making inroads on the leader. With five minutes left to run, he was in Gillies’ slipstream, only to get baulked as he attempted to lap a slower car. This allowed Gillies breathing room, but only briefly. Gans took Gillies on the Lavant Straight in the dying moments, but Gillies returned the favour seconds later to claim yet another win at Goodwood.
