In a significant year for motorsport anniversaries, the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard - itself 30 years old in 2023 - will honour 100 years of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Every year the Festival of Speed assembles some of the most iconic names in motorsport, and 2023 will be no exception, with a roster of some of the greatest cars and drivers in Le Mans history in attendance.

Anticipating the big celebration in 2023, the 2022 Goodwood Revival brought together a total of 16 drivers who between them have won the famous 24-Hour race an astonishing 46 times, including “Mr Le Mans” himself, nine-time winner Tom Kristensen, five-time winners Derek Bell and Emanuele Pirro, four-time winner Henri Pescarolo, who holds the record for the most Le Mans starts, and triple champions Dindo Capello, Marcel Fässler, reigning champion Brendon Hartley, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer.

The Le Mans Centenary celebrations kicked off in style at the 2022 Goodwood Revival when the event hosted the 24 Hours of Le Mans Centenary Trophy made by the Paris Mint. The Trophy was brought onto the starting grid before the Freddie March Memorial Trophy, which ran into dusk on Friday evening, evoking the very essence of the endurance classic.

The Revival is not the only Goodwood motorsport event to have drawn inspiration from Le Mans this year. At the 79th Members’ Meeting, a unique demonstration of Porsche 956 and 962s marked 40 years since the 956’s first Le Mans victory. Running into dusk during a golden sunset on the Saturday evening made for a stunning spectacle. In June, both Porsche and BMW M chose the Festival of Speed as the location for the launch of their new LMDh cars, with Porsche’s 963 LMDh car tackling the Hill on the Friday evening while BMW M’s Hybrid V8 LMDh car took pride of place on the marque’s Central Feature.

The Le Mans centenary joins a series of celebrations at Goodwood next year including 75 years of motorsport at Goodwood, since the Motor Circuit first opened in 1948, 30 years of the Festival of Speed and 25 years of the Goodwood Revival and Goodwood Road Racing Club. In an extensive year of celebrations, the Festival of Speed’s Le Mans tribute stands to be unrivalled and the event that no Le Mans fan would want to miss.

Tom Kristensen, nine-time Le Mans winner and friend of Goodwood said: “It’s amazing that Le Mans has been holding this great race for 100 years. Goodwood and Le Mans are so much fun, I always enjoy visiting and have had the privilege of driving fantastic cars there. It was great to get together with all those Le Mans winners at Revival this year – I’m already looking forward to the reunion next year. I’m sure it will be a remarkable celebration.

Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest said: “The Goodwood Festival of Speed is famous for its display of jaw-dropping racing machines. It is wonderful to see the 24 Hours of Le Mans Centenary take pride of place at such an outstanding event, which is also celebrating an important anniversary. My sincere thanks to The Duke of Richmond and the Goodwood Festival of Speed for training their spotlight on the world’s greatest endurance race.”.

The Duke of Richmond said: “As the 24 Hours of Le Mans is such an iconic and integral motorsport institution, it is only natural that Goodwood should join in the celebrations of its 100th anniversary. We were delighted to welcome our good friends Pierre Fillon and Stéphane Darracq from the Automobile Club de l’Ouest to the Revival in September, and to host the Centenary Trophy on its relay around the world. I’m already looking forward to seeing the greatest collection of Le Mans cars and drivers that we’ve ever had at Goodwood in action on the Hill next year – it’s going to be spectacular!”

Further details of the 2023 Festival of Speed will be announced in the months ahead.
