Legendary Jaguars honoured at the Festival of Speed
For immediate release: Sunday 15 July 2018
The immortal Jaguar XK120 represented the jumping off point for the marque on the global stage. It was a styling masterclass and among the fastest cars on the planet when introduced in 1948. This shapely sports car also marked the start of Jaguar’s involvement in top-flight motorsport and Goodwood is celebrating this British icon in all of its many guises. Not only that, the Festival is also honouring the cars it spawned such as the Le Mans-winning C-type and D-type sports-racers plus the mighty E-type.
Legendary cars tackling the Hill course include ‘NUB120’, the legendary XK120 in which Ian Appleyard won the RAC Rally of Great Britain in addition to the Alpine Rally among other major scalps. Jaguar Classic, meanwhile, is fielding the famous ‘Montlhéry’ coupé which covered 16,851 miles in 168 hours at the famous French banked circuit in 1952, averaging an incredible 100.32mph including stops.
Some of the more left-field machines in the ’70 Years of the XK’ class include the one-off Lister-Jaguar ‘Monzanapolis’ single-seater and James Cottingham’s 1959 Ecurie Ecosse Tojeiro-Jaguar. The former raced only once in period, finishing eleventh in the 1958 ‘Race of Two Worlds’ at Monza, while the latter raced at Goodwood in period with Masten Gregory – ‘The Kansas City Flash’ – at the helm.
