Players step back in time at Revival Golf Challenge

Those observing the Downs course at Goodwood on Friday 9 September could be forgiven for thinking they had taken a step back in time, as 72 players dressed in vintage golf attire took on the challenge of playing the renowned James Braid course with Hickory clubs.

Now in its ninth year, the Revival Golf Challenge began in calm but overcast conditions, with the game being a Stableford format. Each player used a full set of Hickory shafted clubs, lent for the occasion by Tony Hunt’s South of England Hickory Golf and comprising mashies, jiggers, brassies, spoons and niblicks. Such was the level of effort made by the players to dress in period clothing – with no shortage of plus fours, flat caps, classic ties and tweed jackets – it was decided that an individual winner of the best dressed competition could not be chosen.

Among the players teeing off at the shotgun start was Andrew Marshall, who is no stranger to playing with wooden clubs being the current World Hickory Champion. The former European Tour player tweeted; “Goodwood Revival today, course in tip top condition.”

The winners were father and son combination Terry and Chris Kerr, who won with a highly impressive 41 points. Following the triumph, Terry said; “I was playing with my son today and we were celebrating his birthday, so to win was pretty special. This Downs course is tough at the best of times, so getting round with a set of Hickory clubs is a serious challenge – but also a heck of a lot of fun!”

Stuart Gillett, Golf At Goodwood General Manager, was delighted with the turnout. He said; “We had 72 players today and to see the enjoyment everyone had playing hickory golf was fantastic. A number of people commented on it being the best golf event they’ve ever done!

“With fly-pasts from Spitfires and the roar of engines coming from the Motor Circuit, you can understand why players enjoy this event so much. It’s great that golf here is such an active part of the other events on the Goodwood Estate.”
