Apprentice jockey Ryan Kavanagh came out on top at Goodwood Racecourse in the all-Apprentice Racecard, winning the Leading Apprentice Jockey award at Three Friday Nights presented by Fitzdares on Friday 5 June.

The leading apprentice award is calculated on a points system for each race of the fixture, with Kavanagh culminating the most points throughout the evening putting him at the top.

All six races on Friday 5 June count towards the apprentice jockeys’ championship, which runs throughout the British flat racing season.

Winning the Performance of the Evening Award was Arron D’Arcy after his ride in The Goodwood Horseracing Club Membership Apprentice Handicap Stakes, on Salamanca City for trainer James Fanshawe and the Owners Group 124. D’Arcy recorded his first winner of his career, making his first ride at Goodwood Racecourse a winning one.

There was a poignant moment during the evening following The Tommie Jakes Memorial Apprentice Fillies’ Handicap Stakes as Tommie’s parents presented the trophy to winning connections of Land of Magic and jockeys came out from the weighing room to applaud in Tommie Jakes’ memory.

Straight after racing, the Parade Ring was transformed into a dancefloor where iconic DJ act Sub Focus performed to a packed Three Friday Nights crowd.

Apprentice jockeys are young riders aged between 16 and 26 years old, who can claim a weight allowance of between 3lbs and 7lbs to compensate for inexperience. Although they regularly ride in races alongside professional jockeys, Apprentice races provide valuable opportunities to compete against riders of a similar standard.

Tickets are sold out for the next Three Friday Nights on Friday 12 June when Riordan will take centre stage, with limited hospitality remaining. Tickets and hospitality are also sold out for Friday 19 June when DJ Luck and MC Neat perform after an evening of racing.
