Few marques have such a rich history in motor sport as Mercedes-Benz, and rather fewer in so many different disciplines. The marque’s 125-year involvement is being celebrated at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed with a raft of cars from private collections and the factory museum in attendance. They span everything from the perpendicular 1903 60HP – all 9.2-litres of it – braved by Felicity Collings, to the Mercedes-AMG F1 WO8 which has been driven this weekend by Esteban Ocon. Then there are the many ‘Silver Arrows’ which virtually owned Grand Prix racing during the 1930s, not least the mighty supercharged, straight-eight-engined W25. And let’s not forget the Group C Sauber-Mercedes sports-prototypes from the late 1980s, three of which have made their presence felt on the hill and assorted DTM saloon racers from the past three decades. Former works drivers Jochen Mass and Karl Wendlinger have been in attendance along with Ellen Lohr and Bernd Mayländer.
