Golf | Press Article 05/09/24

Golf At Goodwood is proud to announce the launch of The Copse, a new Short Game Area and Short Course facility located within The Park course at Goodwood. Designed by Golf Course and Golf Academy architect James Edwards of EDI Design, The Copse offers an exceptional setting for golfers to refine their skills and enjoy the game in a relaxed yet professional environment.

The Short Course

The newly introduced Short Course features six meticulously designed holes, ranging from 50 to 90 yards, artfully positioned around the scenic Evergreen Oak and Pine Trees. This innovative course provides an ideal setting for golfers to engage in a short game with friends, practice scoring shots after a day's work, or simply enjoy the game in a tranquil environment. The Short Course at The Copse emphasises enjoyment and relaxation, with a focus on providing an engaging experience where scoring is optional, music is encouraged and fun is compulsory!

Short Game Area

The Copse also includes a comprehensive Short Game Area, which consists of five distinct practice zones dedicated to chipping, pitching, and bunker play. Centred around an expansive 900m² Academy green, these zones simulate real-life scenarios golfers encounter on the course, such as uphill and downhill shots, cross-green play and precision flop shots. Complementing these zones is a 400m² putting green, designed to offer golfers ample opportunity to fine-tune their putting techniques prior to embarking on a full round.

James Edwards, EIGCA Golf Course Architect shares, “It is not often that you have the privilege to work and learn alongside one of the biggest names in British Sport. To have the opportunity to enhance their stellar golf offering with an elite academy on four acres of prime Goodwood parkland was a dream come true for us. Our focus from the outset was to reduce their customer journey by a quarter which meant reorganising the existing facilities which we applaud the team at Goodwood for trusting. This new improved flow means The Copse will be accessed by all golfers on the way in and out for the foreseeable future providing an exciting place for competition, a quiet space for relaxation, an intelligent space for golf tuition and an important place for golf development and learning"

Gary Beves, General Manager of Golf At Goodwood, commented on the significance of this new addition, “The introduction of The Copse is a key development for Golf At Goodwood, reflecting our commitment to enhancing the golfing experience for our members and guests. This facility is designed to provide both a challenging and enjoyable environment, catering to golfers of all skill levels. The combination of the Short Course and Short Game Area offers a unique opportunity for players to refine their skills in a setting that is both stimulating and enjoyable. We are excited to see how our members and guests will embrace The Copse and utilise it to elevate their game."

About Golf at Goodwood

Golf At Goodwood offers a rich history and world-class golfing experience. The first round of golf at Goodwood was played in 1901, when the 6th Duke of Richmond opened the course on the Downs above Goodwood House. In 1914, Lord Bernard commissioned renowned golf course architect James Braid to redesign the course, shaping Goodwood into a premier golfing destination. Braid’s influence remains evident to this day.

Today, Golf At Goodwood boasts two 18-hole championship courses. The Downs course, one of the oldest in Sussex, stretches from 5,505 to 7,134 yards with a Par 72, featuring fast fairways, undulating greens and striking elevation changes across the downland landscape. The Park course, ranging from 5,584 to 6,650 yards (Par 72), winds through the stunning 18th-century parkland surrounding Goodwood House.

In addition, players and visitors can enjoy the new addition to Golf At Goodwood, The Copse Short Game Area and Short Course, as well as a modern clubhouse and an impressive Academy.
