Turbocharged Titans Storm the Hill

24 June 2016

All eyes were on Japanese driver Katsuaki Kubota earlier this afternoon as he steered the ex-Ayrton Senna Lotus-Renault 97T up the Hill. It was aboard this car that the future three-time World Championship winner claimed his first victory in Formula One at Estoril in April 1985. This fabulous machine is one of eleven cars participating in The Turbo Era class during the Festival weekend.

These include such icons as the Renault RS01 and Porsche-engined McLaren-TAG MP4/2, all of which rattle the senses and stir the soul. Touring car star Andrew Jordan was also on hand, enjoying a rare outing in a single-seater aboard Richard Meins Beatrice-Lola THL2.

These 1.5-litre Turbo-era cars provided some of the most spectacular racing in Formula One history, with BMW engines in particular producing up to 1500bhp in qualifying trim. The array of Turbo cars at Goodwood is unquestionably one of the finest ever gathered together in one place.
