Goodwood is delighted to announce that this year’s Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard will celebrate the extraordinary career of Colin McRae MBE - the first British rally driver to win the World Rally Championship (WRC).
Over a remarkable career spanning from 1985 to the early 2000s, McRae took home 25 WRC victories and over 40 podium finishes, setting new benchmarks in the world of rally driving. His breakthrough came in 1995 when he clinched the World Rally Championship title driving the Subaru Impreza 555, triumphing over teammate Carlos Sainz Sr. in a dramatic season finale which quickly established him as one of the greatest rally drivers of all time.
McRae continued to push the boundaries of the sport with factory drives for Ford and Citroën, where his relentless determination and commanding driving style played a key role in securing multiple manufacturers’ titles - including Citroën’s first in 2003.
To mark the 30th anniversary of his 1995 championship, the Festival of Speed will honour McRae with a special tribute, bringing together some of the most significant cars from his career, including:
- 1995 Subaru Impreza 555, in which he secured the world title
- 1993 Subaru Legacy from his Rally of Malaysia victory
- 1997 Subaru Impreza that dominated the RAC Rally
- 2001 Ford Focus WRC that epitomised his later years at the top of the sport
The Duke of Richmond CBE DL said: “I am deeply grateful to the McRae family for their support in helping us create a truly special tribute to Colin's life and career. Colin was nothing short of a force of nature behind the wheel - his passion, courage, and sheer talent left an unforgettable mark on rallying and all of us who were lucky enough to have seen him in action. It will be wonderful to see the remarkable collection of cars he raced on the Goodwood Hill across the weekend.”
The Colin McRae celebration joins the previously announced F1 75 festivities, including appearances from Alain Prost, Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell as well as influential designers and legendary champions. The Festival of Speed will also remember the summer of ‘95 as Carl Fogarty reunites with his Ducati 916.
Final tickets for the Festival of Speed are available at goodwood.com.
