Bonhams|Cars has consistently presented successful sales at these events boasting sale totals each season in excess of £20 million for the last five years. This remarkable partnership between Bonhams|Cars and Goodwood has seen the auction house showcase a stunning selection of rare and historic cars alongside the legendary motorsport events that take place at Goodwood, including the Festival of Speed, the Goodwood Revival, and the Members’ Meeting.
“We are thrilled to renew and extend our partnership with Goodwood,” said Chabi Nouri, Bonhams CEO. “Over the past three decades, our collaboration has grown into one of the most respected and exciting partnerships in the world of classic cars and motorsport. The unique atmosphere and prestige of Goodwood’s events provide the perfect stage for us to present some of the best cars in the world. We look forward to continuing to work closely with the Goodwood team to offer unparalleled experiences for collectors and enthusiasts alike.”
The Duke of Richmond CBE DL, founder of the Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival, added, “I am truly delighted that our longstanding partnership with Bonhams is set to continue. Bonhams has been a part of Goodwood’s events since the very first Festival of Speed back in 1993 and the auctions play a vital role in continuing motorsport and motoring tradition, both here at Goodwood and beyond. All of us at Goodwood look forward to working closely with the Bonhams team to deliver exceptional auctions and experiences.”
The very first Goodwood Festival of Speed took place in 1993 and was the brainchild of The Duke of Richmond, then Lord March. The event centered around the hillclimb running through the parklands of Goodwood House. The idea was received enthusiastically by the late Robert Brooks, racing driver turned auctioneer, who later went on to acquire Bonhams in 2000.
The inaugural Goodwood Festival of Speed in 1993 was a resounding success, striking a chord with the public and igniting a passion for motorsport that continues to resonate to this day. The Festival’s rapid growth enabled The Duke to renovate the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit which had been opened by his racing driver grandfather – Freddie March – in 1948 and was in operation until 1966.
In 1998 the first Goodwood Revival – celebrating the years during which the Goodwood Motor Circuit was operational – was staged, with a Bonhams sale mirroring the success of the Festival of Speed. More recently in 2014, Goodwood introduced the Members’ Meeting, which has featured a Bonhams|Cars auction since 2015.
Together, The Duke of Richmond and Robert Brooks laid the foundation for what would become some of the most celebrated motorsport events in the world. Their shared passion shaped the format and identity of Goodwood’s events, creating a legacy that continues to captivate automotive enthusiasts worldwide.
Tim Schofield, Head of Department, Bonhams|Cars UK, remarked, “From the early days of Goodwood, we’ve worked hand-in-hand to grow and innovate, offering more sales and creating a standout platform for both sellers and collectors. This partnership, which began with Robert Brooks and The Duke of Richmond, has been instrumental in establishing Goodwood as a premier destination for classic car enthusiasts, and we’re excited to build on this legacy by continuing to offer exceptional auctions and experiences for our clients.”
